The city mayor of Buea has demolished several houses in Buea, South west region of Cameroon with claims that these houses are poorly constructed. The demolishing process took place yesterday Wednesday November 25, 2020, under the helpless watchful eyes of the entire victims.
According to the city council, the houses that have been destroyed did not respect the norms of construction put in place. The city Mayor, Barrister David Mafani Namange acknowledged that; “the land-used map was not respected reasons why there is traffic congestion. I want that anyone coming to town should be able to move around at ease.” The objective of the exercise is to enable the construction and opening of new roads that will aid decongest Buea which is becoming very congested for the past few months. He further said; “we have done a lot of sensitization before this destruction of houses. So no one should be angry with them because they did their best to inform the inhabitants ahead of time before taking any actions.” The victims therefore should be responsible for their stubbornness to have obeyed the warnings from the city council and are presently bearing the consequences.
As a result of the demolition exercise, several families and individuals have been rendered homeless as a victim testified saying; “henceforth I do not know where I will sleep anymore. Surprisingly today, a bulldozer came in to destroy our houses.”
Others on their part, who were hiding in Buea town due to the ongoing crisis, are now rendered homeless. Another victim recounts; “this morning was an unusual day in Buea when the city council destroyed my place and as I stand now I am very stranded and do not know where I will move to. I am with my husband and two children, we all are now homeless.” The said victims now seek refuge
